Just write

Writing first thing in the morning, before jumping into the deep of regular project work, feels like releasing a thick, foggy layer of unstructured thoughts, and freeing up the brain to do its best work

Every once in a while, I feel like I could use a reset of a sort. Writing is that reset for me. Starting a day by writing down whatever fleeting and current thoughts exist in my mind frees up my brain for the work that needs to be done.

Some of these thoughts will just go out and never come back, like waste. Others will have potential to be seeds for future more developed and mature thoughts. Either way, they need to be taken out and sorted into their respective categories.

Writing doesn’t seem as tempting as the first cup of coffee in the morning. It doesn’t come with the promise of instant gratification, like checking notifications on my phone. There’s no dopamine hit promise tied to it. But I know it’s good for me and I know already by the second paragraph, I will be so glad I got to it.

If my brain were a home, writing out my thoughts early in the day would be akin to getting the house in order, so I could properly enjoy the day.

I’m not the person to burden myself with the imperatives of being perfect at anything. The only way I was able to quit smoking back in the day was to acknowledge that if I ever wanted to grab an odd smoke again, it wouldn’t be a failure or betrayal of some kind. This allowed me to ditch the nasty habit and keep a 99.9% success record, with 100% happiness and peace of mind.

So, I’ll once again tell myself it’s fantastic to write first thing in the morning, and I will do it as often as possible. Now that I finally have a working blog and website, who knows? I might even stick to it. Hang around and find out!
